Windows 7 change COM Port – serial connected through USB

Set up: Serial interface device connected to Windows 7 64 bit using serial to usb connector.

Step 1:
Open device manager from control panel, if you see unrecognized usb device the you need a device driver. Otherwise skip to step 2.

The best way to get the driver is right click on the device and select troubleshoot and let the windows find the driver for you.

Once the driver is installed you will the device in Ports (COM & LPT) section.

Step 2:

Open COM & LPT and right click on the Communications Port and select properties. You should have only one, because you are setting this up for first time. If you more than then you can still change the port but make sure you changing for the right device.

Select port settings and click advanced. You will see the window below. You can change the port number in this screen.
